The 14th edition of the island Games , « jeux des îles» will take place in the islands of the Azores between may 25-30 mobilising almost 1300 participants.
The azorean Governement and sports associations will be working together with the Games Organisition to make this event very special.
Azores were nominated the European Region of the year 2010 which will be celebrated during the island Games festivity.
The islands that will be participating in this event are : Azores, the Canary islands, Cyprus, Corfu,Corisca,Elba,Guadeloupe,Jersey,Corcula,Madeira,Malta,Martinique,Mayotte,Sardinia,Sicily and Wight.
The performance of the athletes will be on the following sports : Swimming, Handball,Judo, tennis,track and field,basketball,volleyball, sailing , gymnastics and table tennis.
Others sports will be held at the facilities of some local schools where the local students will be able to assist them and learn as part of their school curriculum.
The opening ceremony will be marked by the inauguration of the renewal works of Laramjeiras sports hall.
A comemorative stamp will be also released with the logo of the games. This stamp will represent the union of a hawk and the whale tail, the great symbols of Azores.
We hope that this event will take the name of the Azores all over the world by the eyes and comments of the young athletes talking about their 2010 Island Games back home !
