FLORES



Flores-  Flores Island is  in the Western Group of Azores. It has an area of 141.7 km ². The highest point of the island is Morro Alto, 914 m altitude. This island is separated in two counties:  Santa Cruz ( the most populated ) and Lajes das Flores.


History
Was first seen in 1452 by Diogo de Teive and the population only arrived on the early decades of sixteenth century. The extreme isolation of the island was only broken with the installation, 1966Of French Flower Base.
This island  is considered one of the most beautiful of Azores where the thousands of  blue hydrangeas divide the fields along the roads on the banks of streams and ponds.
In May 27 of 2009, this ialsnd was listed at World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO, Joining the Graciosa and Corvo .

The micro-climate gives a great number and variety of exotic species from all over the world.

Gastronomy
Besides the traditional meat and fish dishes,there's a variation of meals that include: Papa Grossa, Sopa de Agrião, Cozido de Porco, Molhos de Dobrada, Inhames com Linguiça and Feijões com Cabeça de Porco, as well as produceing a local cheese and creamy butter.
And seafood meals: Caldeirada de Congro, Bonito Assado no Forno, and Pasteis de Ervas Marinhas, in addition to Atlantic lobster, Cavacos, Crabs, Limpets and Barnacles.
